Travel Preparations
It is recommended for students to get health insurance and travel insurance prior to their arrival in Stavanger. Read more about matters related to health during your stay in Norway. The Norwegian National Insurance Scheme isn't travel insurance. It does not cover any loss or damage to persons or property that might occur in Norway. Therefore, we urge all students to insure their household contents during their stay in Norway. Theft and burglary in student dormitories may occur.
Students staying in Norway for more than one year automatically become insured under the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme once they receive a Norwegian ID number (fødselsnummer). Please note that it can take up to 2-3 months before you receive a Norwegian ID number.
All students are reminded to bring their original Bachelor's diploma and transcript of records to be verified in Norway. If your documents are not in English, Norwegian, Danish or Swedish – you need to bring the official translations accompanying your documents. You will receive an e-mail in September with an appointment date and instructions to present your documents for verification. Please do not show up without an appointment. Failure to present original documentation may lead to admission being revoked.

It's best to arrive one week before the semester starts to get adjusted to living in a new city. All students must arrive before the student registration deadline on 1 September.
Students who require a study permit usually must wait until their application has been processed and they have been granted an entry visa to travel to Norway. Entry visas are usually valid for 30 days. Make sure to travel to Stavanger within these dates.
For students flying to Stavanger, the closest international airport to the campus is Stavanger Airport in Sola.
Key Pickup
How to pick up your keys for student accommodation when you arrive in Stavanger.
From 1 August, students will be able to collect their keys to their student accommodation at the closest hotel to Stavanger Airport. This applies to all students who applied for student accommodation and were allocated a room from SiS.
Students arriving by other modes of transport will also need to go to the hotel receptioin by the airport to pick up their keys. This is the only location where you can collect your keys from.
Scandic Stavanger Airport Hotel
- From: 1 August, 12:00 noon
- Address: Flyplassvegen 226, Sola
Students can pick up their keys upon presenting their passport at the hotel reception. Nobody except the student can pick up the key to their accommodation.
Deposit Return and Bank Card
For self-financing non-EU/EEA students.
Students who transferred funds to a student deposit account held by the university for their study permit application will be able to access NOK 50 000 of their funds through the BankAxept card. Please note that NOK 600 will be automatically deducted from your balance as a card fee.
The BankAxept can be collected at the library in the Kjølv Egeland's building from 1 August. The BankAxept card and PIN will not be handed out before the student provides proof of identity with their passport.
We urge students to bring enough money to financially support themselves as it can take some time before you are able to access the money on your BankAxept card. The estimated processing time is 5- 10 business days.
This is a temporary solution. Once students have opened up their own Norwegian bank accounts, the remaining balance in their student deposit account can be transferred to your personal bank account. Go to the library reception with your passport and fill out a fund transfer form. Your fund transfer request will be processed by the Economy Department and you will receive the money in your personal bank account.
