Communication technologies are the basis of today’s modern society, with a significant impact on our daily lives.

Everyone uses a smartphone, which includes multiple communications technologies. These technologies are used, for example, to pay at the grocery store, to connect to your headset and listen to your favorite music, to make voice and video call, and to browse on the web in mobility. Communication technologies are also enabling the future smart cities and the fourth industrial revolution.

ComNet, a research group at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, focuses on future communication technologies and the emerging wired and wireless networking paradigms. From the fifth generation of cellular networks (5G) and Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) to Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking.

ComNet collects national and international experts with multi-disciplinary background. These allows the research group to have a broad range of expertise, focuses, and application areas.

Expertise:

  • Modelling and optimization (mathematical programming and machine learning)
  • Internet transport layer and congestion control
  • Network design and resource allocation
  • Web protocols and performance (HTTP)

Focus:

  • Quality of Service (in particular low latency)
  • Dependability
  • Security
  • Energy Efficiency

Application Area:

  • Traffic Safety
  • Vehicular Communication
  • Smart City
  • Industry 4.0

ComNet includes not only theoretical research activities, but also practical activities. For this reason, the research group has multiple testbeds.

Testbeds:

  • 5G-MODaNel testbed, a 5G-MEC testbed focused on vehicular communication
  • TEACUP testbed
  • Software Defined Radio testbed
  • 2 Raspberry PI cluster testbeds

The ComNet group is part of the UiS artificial intelligence initiative, Stavanger AI Lab.

5G Management and Orchestration for Data and Network Integration (5G-MODaNeI)

5G-MODaNeI aims to provide innovative and intelligent solutions for allocating together the network resources of 5G and the data resources of Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) in order to maximize the security and dependability.

Building bilateral research network towards resilient, smart and sustainable cities and regions

This initiative aims at developing and improving research cooperation between the University of Stavanger and the Czech Technical University in Prague. The main focus of the bilateral cooperation will be the exchange and broadening of the knowledge about planning in the context of smart, sustainable and resilient cities.
