Content

The course provides an introduction to quantitative chemical analysis based on gravimetry, spectroscopy, titrimetry, and electrochemistry. A brief introduction to HPLC will also be provided. Moreover, the theory associated with these methods is presented. This includes acid-base calculations, solubility, Nernst, (etc.).

Learning outcome

After completing this course the student should:

  • have the sufficient theoretical knowledge to understand and perform chemical analysis
  • be able to calculate equilibrium concentrations in complex systems, including acid/base, precipitation and complexing agents.
  • understand how ionic strength affect pH and equilibrium constants.
  • have basic knowledge about instruments/equipment
  • be able to perform gravimetric, titrimetric, spectroscopic and electrochemical analysis + basic HPLC

The exam must be solved individually and collaboration with other people is not allowed.

Coursework requirements

7 Accepted laboratory reports

Compulsory course attendance that must be completed and approved before access to the laboratory: TN101 HSE-course for bachelor students.

7 laboratory excercises, 4 hours per week with submission of 7 mandatory laboratory reports.

Mandatory work demands (such as hand in assignments, lab- assignments, projects, etc) must be approved by subject teacher 3 weeks ahead of examination date.

Completion of mandatory lab assignments are to be made at the times and in the groups that are assigned and published. Absence due to illness or for other reasons must be communicated as soon as possible to the laboratory personnel. One cannot expect that provisions for completion of the lab assignments at other times are made unless prior arrangements with the laboratory personnel have been agreed upon. Failure to complete the assigned labs on time or not having them approved will result in barring from taking the exam of the course.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
