Learning outcome
A candidate having completed and passed the course will have the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
- Have knowledge of the elements included in a project proposal and the connection between these
- Have knowledge of the main stages of conducting a research project, as well as relevant theories and methods
Skills
- Be able to formulate research questions or issues to be addressed
- Be able to review research literature in the field and, if the study is empirical, be able to use appropriate research methods to collect data
- Be able to develop a project proposal for their own master’s project that explains: the project’s topic and research questions, relevant literature, theoretical framework and methodological approach, and a realistic timeline for carrying out the project
- Be able to write a thesis based on the project proposal, and show insight into relevant research, theories and methods appropriate for the chosen research question(s)
- Be able to present their own research project in a professional and subject-appropriate manner
General competencies
- Have knowledge of the research process
- Be able to identify and reflect on relevant ethical issues in their own research project
- Be able to present their project in a way that is appropriate for the purpose and the audience

The scope of the master’s thesis is 20,000 - 40,000 words with font type 12 and line spacing 1.5 (in Times New Roman or equivalent font). Front page, table of contents, foreword, references and appendices do not count towards the scope.The master’s thesis must be written in English. The expected language level for the thesis is C1 or close to C2.
Coursework requirements
The following compulsory requirements are included in the course:
1. Project proposal (5-7 pages) has to be approved.
2. Compulsory supervision
The candidate is required to attend minimum 2 sessions with their supervisor to be permitted to hand in their thesis within the current semester. This requirement must be approved by the supervisor by 15. march.
2. Oral presentation of the master’s thesis (20-30 minutes) has to be approved. If the candidate has to submit a new or revised thesis, a new presentation must be held.
3. 70% attendance at research and writing workshops
All compulsory requirements must be approved in order for the master’s thesis to be assessed.
Consequences of non-approved compulsory requirements are that the master’s thesis cannot be assessed. Cf. Regulations on studies and examinations at the University of Stavanger (examination regulations), § 3-8 no. 3.
