ConductIT Express – Fundamentals of conducting (VCI101)

ConductIT Express is a one-semester, 10 ETCS course in fundamentals of conducting. Students must participate at Dirigentuka in Stavanger in August, complete the ConductIT MOOC, and attend one final weekend on-campus in Stavanger in the autumn.

ConductIT Express - Fundamentals of conducting is for beginners in conducting or for conductors who want to study the basic, fundamental techniques of conducting.

The course is centered around participation at Dirigentuka (five days in August), and one weekend session on-campus in the autumn. The student must also complete the MOOC of ConductIT at www.conductIT.eu/mooc and practice the associated self-studies.

The course of study may include work in the following subjects:

  • Conducting techniques, including posture, basic movement control, beating patterns, use of the baton
  • Score study
  • Rehearsal technique and instruction
  • Aural training
  • Music theory
  • Score study
  • Leadership

Learning outcome

After completing and passing the examination for the course, candidates will have acquired the knowledge, skills and general proficiency that will enable them to:

General proficiency

  • display a fundamental understanding of the conductor’s role and function in rehearsal and concert situations and as a leader
  • set goals for their own learning and development as a conductor

Knowledge

  • To know basic conducting techniques and beat patterns
  • To understand the principles of effective rehearsal
  • To understand key theoretical concepts in score analysis
  • To identify some of the qualities of leadership required of a conductor

Skills

  • To perform basic conducting techniques, including good posture, use of the baton and basic beat patterns
  • To conduct a rehearsal
  • To perform basic score analysis

Required prerequisite knowledge

General qualification requirements for admission to the ConductIT study program:

  • Higher Education Entrance Qualification ("Generell studiekompetanse")
  • English language proficiency

Applicants will be reviewed by the faculty conducting audition committee to determine if their prerequisite knowledge qualifies for admission to this specific course. This evaluation is based on the applicants’ submitted materials, such as their documented educational background, CV, and application text.

To qualify for the course ConductIT Express - Fundamentals of conducting, the applicant must show that they have a basic general musical competence, such as music reading skills and experience in ensemble performance, for instance, obtained through prior training or education or through practice as a performer, educator, conductor, composer or similar.

For each academic year, a schedule with dates for the following course season, including the examination schedule, will normally be published by February 1st for the upcoming academic year.The final exam is graded pass/fail and consists of a conducting session assessment during the on-campus event in the autumn.The examination must involve a musical program of at least 4 minutes duration to be rehearsed and performed with an ensemble provided by the university. The repertoire is to be set by the teacher and announced to the student before the examination. The examination will take place on campus.

Coursework requirements

In order to register for the exam, the student must have been present at Dirigentuka and the on-campus weekend session and must have completed the MOOC.

Procedures for student assessment within the course have been drawn up by the faculty and adapted for this type of performance course. The course assessment is in accordance with the University of Stavanger’s quality system.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
