Content

This course consists of lectures, workshops and practical assignments and covers the following areas:

• Distant microphones recording techniques
• Stereo sound techniques
• Multi-channel recording (surround audio and more)
• Close microphones recording techniques
• Mixing and processing audio tools
• MIDI
• Mixing
• Mastering

Learning outcome

After completing the course, it is expected that the students will have acquired the following knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of music production in different genres: recording and mixing of different music genres, musical instruments, and use of music production equipment.
• Knowledge of recording using main microphone techniques and multi-microphone techniques, mixing, and mastering.
• Knowledge of microphone usage in relation to recording different instruments and ensembles, and use of processing tools in mixing and finalizing produced music.

Skills

• Students should be able to choose the appropriate microphone technique for different types of musical genres and musical instruments.
• Students should be able to use audio production equipment and software for recording, editing, and mixing music recordings.
• Students should be able to listen critically and make professional evaluations of music recordings.

General competence

• Students should have learned to work in a team and understand the collaboration between individuals involved in music production.
• Students should be able to compare and evaluate different production methods in music.
• Students should also have learned to take responsibility for a production process from planning to finished product, including communication with musicians for recording projects.

Lectures, group work, tutoring, obligatory practical assignments and productions with feedback.

The students should note that subjects covered in lectures can be relevant for the evaluation/exam.

This course will sometimes demand working at unusual times. Therefore, it might be difficult to combine studying with work.
