Content
In the course, we will cover unit operations such as adsorption, absorption, membrane separation, chemical reactor. Students will get introduced to the fundamental transport processes: mass transport and heat transport and their importance in designing unit operation. In the heat transfer student will learn about modes of heat transfer, Fourier’s law and its use to calculate heat flux through various geometry. In mass transfer, students will learn about diffusion, convective mass transfer, and apply Fick's law for calculating mass flux across various phase boundaries. After this students will calculate the design parameter in the design of the unit operation. This course will also cover reaction kinetics and reactor design.
The course connects current challenges in energy and environmental, with sought process technological solutions, current research & development trends towards sustainable process design.
Learning outcome
After completing this course, the student should be able to:
- explain different types of separation processes and underlying mechanism
- explain fundamental transport processes such as mass transfer and heat transfer
- perform energy and material balance for unit operations.
- describe in detail unit operations such as absorption, adsorption, Membrane separation, heat exchanger and chemical reactor
- calculate the crucial design parameter for absorption, adsorption, membrane separation, and heat exchanger units.
- understand the engineering problems, collect data, analyze the data and use appropriate formulations to solve the problem.
