Master's Thesis in Societal Safety (SAMMAS)
Using theory, research methods and collected data, students will prepare a written master's thesis in the field of societal safety. The master's thesis can have very different forms, some can be empirical, while others are purely theoretical. The main goal of the master's thesis is for students to carry out independent research work. The student must show the ability for systematic thinking, academic specialization and objective assessment. In addition, students will receive training in the relevant use of source material to show how their own work can be placed in relation to existing research.

Content
The department, and the academic staff of Societal Safety and Security, will beyond the 3rd semester of the master's study be helpful with proposals for master's theses, as well as discussions about possible master's thesis projects. The students will be assigned a supervisor at the end of the third semester. The student is expected to be active in identifying and formulating topics in collaboration with the supervisor. It is important for both student and supervisor that a good collaboration is established during the completion of the assignment. Contact with companies, public agencies/institutions etc. takes place primarily through personal inquiries from the student him/herself, or in some cases through the supervisor.
The guidance is carried out in the form of individual guidance, colloquium-based guidance and/or seminar-based guidance.
Excerpt from the master's thesis:
In consultation with the supervisor, the final assignment text and plan for completing the assignment is prepared. The application for a master's thesis must be submitted to the administration by 1. December. As for other subjects, you register for the exam by confirming the education plan, as well as by sending the administration a contract for the master's thesis (deadline 1. February).

Assessment of the master's thesis:
Assessment of the master's thesis is carried out by an external examiner in collaboration with the supervisor. If there is disagreement about the grading between the supervisor and the external examiner, the external examiner has the final word. Censorship must be available no later than 10 weeks after the submission deadline.

At the end of the course, the student is expected to:

- have acquired such a good overview of the study programme's theory areas and perspectives that she/he can make an informed choice in terms of theoretical grounding for her/his own thesis topic.
Skills
- be able to formulate a limited problem for own investigation and put this into a larger perspective.
- be able to demonstrate insight into the chosen theoretical basis and can use this in the analysis of the specific problem.
- be able to create an overview and systematize empirical material with an aim of analysing the chosen issue.
General competence
- be able to demonstrate awareness of the connections between problem formulation, theoretical perspective, analysis, and conclusion.

Regulations relating to studies and examinations at the University of Stavanger, § 3-10 section 4:A candidate will generally have one attempt at a performing examination or Bachelor's or Master's thesis.a) Upon application, a second attempt may be granted if a candidate wishes to improve their grade. In such cases, the candidate may not be permitted to revise a previously submitted response, but must write a new response on a new basisb) Upon application, a candidate who has not passed the bachelor's or master's thesis may be granted a second attempt. In such cases, a reworked version of the bachelor's or master's thesis may be submitted, or a completely new thesis may be submitted. This must then be submitted by the specified deadline and will count as a new exam attempt.c) The Dean himself shall issue supplementary regulations for the completion and supervision of Bachelor's and Master's theses.Unsubmitted master's thesis, will be registered as "fail".
