About the department of Chemistry, Bioscience and Environmental Engineering
The department of Chemistry, Bioscience and Environmental Engineering is part of Faculty of Science and Technology.
The department has the following three main missions: Research, Innovation, and Education.
Research activities are broad ranging from synthetic chemistry to molecular biology. The department aims at being a partner in regional, national and international research, and holds facilities with state of the art equipment for cross-disciplinary research collaborations.
Innovation is key in the technical sciences. The department strives towards new ways of thinking, the development of new methodologies and being up to date on current research within our fields of interest.
Education represents the cornerstone in society. In research and in life, ignorance is not a virtue. The department aims to provide first-class education from undergraduate to postgraduate research training. We are also involved in public outreach activities, informing the general public of our research and educational areas.
Studies
The department offers five study programs and our students can choose from a wide range of natural science subjects. In addition, we offer a PhD program in chemistry and bioscience.

Master of Science in Biological Chemistry
This master's program is taught in English. By the end of the program the students will have acquired practical and theoretical skills in molecular biology, biophysical chemistry and practical bioinformatics or in organic chemistry.
Master of Science in Environmental Engineering
This master's program is taught in English. The aim of the MSc in Environmental Engineering is to provide students with knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible water managers and engineers.
Chemistry and Biological Science - PhD
Chemistry and Biological Science is a subfield within the doctoral programme in Science and Technology at UiS. The subfield has specialisations in chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental technology. The doctoral programme is linked to the research within each of these specialisations.
Research in chemistry, environmental and biological sciences
Our research strategy is to progress scientific knowledge and applications within the fields of one health and the circular society.
Research at the Department of Chemistry, Bioscience and Environmental Technology encompasses human, animal, plant and environmental health by focusing on the interaction between the disciplines and effect on the total environment.
Chemistry is important to understand life and the environment at the molecular level. A more sustainable approach to develop chemicals tailored to improve health and lessen the impact on the environment is key.
The understanding of life at an organismal and cellular level and ecosystem interactions is the remit of biology and important to health in all areas. Chemical and biological understanding of natural systems is essential to understand human impact on our planet. Environmental engineering offers technological solutions to remedy environmental issues for a sustainable future.
