FILIORUM– Centre for Research in Early Education and Care at the University of Stavanger was established to gain both more and broader methodological research in the ECEC field. The goal is to conduct research that ensures high quality in Norwegian kindergartens, and foster belonging, communication, and play for all children.
Early childhood education and care (ECEC) is one of the primary areas of research at the University of Stavanger. For several years the university has built competence and knowledge in this field.
One of Norway’s leading research environments on early childhood education and care
FILIORUM– Centre for Research in Early Education and Care was established in 2018. The center was initiated by the Ministry of Education and is funded by the Research Council of Norway. FILIORUM's role as a national network center is to contribute to both more and broader methodologically oriented research on ECEC, as well as creating interdisciplinary environments that can have a major impact in this field of research.
Quality and diversity as the main focus
FILIORUM believes that the ECEC sector, with its great diversity, shall be characterised by quality at all levels. The centre’s research and development work shall contribute to high quality throughout the whole ECEC sector, and benefit all children in Norwegian kindergartens. The centre aims to serve the ECEC sector as a national hub for cutting edge research on quality for diversity, innovation and policy guidance.
Children’s well-being, development, play and learning are at the core of all activity at the centre. Hence the name FILIORUM, which is Latin and means "for children". The themes of the three research areas are belonging, communication and play.
Creating good synergies in the academic community
The researchers at FILIORUM represent different viewpoints, research traditions and methods. This gives the centre a solid foundation for building innovation and quality in the ECEC sector.
