Industrial and Public Sector PhDs
In an industrial or public sector PhD scheme, the company and UiS collaborate on a doctoral project. The project is carried out by an employee under the supervision of UiS and the company. Through this scheme, the company builds expertise within its own framework and needs. Simultaneously, the company employee receives a doctoral education strengthened by insight into the company's key challenges, and the research skills to solve these.
Companies that enter into an agreement with UiS and a PhD candidate receive a financial grant through the Norwegian Research Council, which corresponds to half the scholarship rate for three years. The grant is paid directly to the company as project support and not as a personal scholarship to the candidate.

Admissions
Applicants to the industrial or public sector PhD at the Faculty of Science and Technology apply for admissions to the PhD programme in Science and Technology.
In order to be admitted to the PhD programme in Science and Technology the applicant must fulfill the following admissions criteria:
- Minimum 5-year master's degree (i.e. 3-year bachelor's degree and 2-year master's degree).
- Minimum grade B average on the master's level courses
- Minimum grade B on the master's thesis
Applicants with backgrounds in other fields than those approved by the faculty for admission to the doctoral programme, or with lower grades, may be admitted after a special assessment. These applicants must be able to document the high likelihood of their completing the PhD programme within the prescribed time. If necessary, they may be required to produce additional documentation at the professional level, for example, through a preliminary examination. Such applicants may also be required to take the necessary qualifying courses and/or supplementary subjects within a given deadline.

For the application to be considered complete, the following documents must be enclosed:
- Certified Copy of master’s degree certificate or equivalent education
- Certificates from other relevant studies, if any
- Project description
- List of publications, if any (beyond master’s thesis)
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Documentation of funding for the PhD study
