Offshore wind energy represents a unique and promising frontier in the renewable energy sector, harnessing the power of wind over vast expanses of open water. Unlike onshore wind farms, offshore wind projects benefit from stronger and more consistent wind speeds, leading to higher energy generation potential. The proximity to densely populated coastal areas also reduces transmission losses, making offshore wind a more efficient and reliable source of clean energy. Additionally, offshore wind farms have the potential to be built at larger scales, taking advantage of the vast ocean spaces available. However, developing offshore wind projects comes with its own set of challenges, including complex legal and regulatory frameworks, technological advancements in floating platforms, and environmental considerations to protect marine ecosystems. Despite these challenges, the unique benefits of offshore wind energy make it a crucial component in the transition to a more sustainable and carbon-neutral energy future. Offshore Wind Law is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework governing the development of offshore wind projects. Participants will explore the unique legal challenges and considerations involved in the rapidly growing offshore wind industry.

This course is designed for legal professionals, energy industry professionals, policymakers, regulators, and anyone interested in gaining an understanding of the legal aspects of offshore wind energy development. Participants should have a basic knowledge of energy law and regulations, but no prior experience in offshore wind law is required. Whether you are looking to specialize in renewable energy law or simply expand your knowledge in this rapidly growing field, this course will provide you with the necessary tools and insights to navigate the legal complexities of offshore wind projects.

Learning outcome

The course will give an introduction into offshore wind legal issues where the student will gain knowledgeand skills in offshore wind law, but also convey knowledge and insight into offshore wind with legalaccuracy, nuanced, factual, and independently both written and orally.

There will be online lectures and one live Information seminar about the exam(tba)

Examination

Home written exam of 4 hours

Exam: 6th of December 09:00-13:00.

Grading: A-F

Admission requirement

General admission requirements:

Higher Education Entrance Qualification (GSK = grunnleggende studiekompetanse) or prior learning (realkompetanse).

Admission based on prior learning (realkompetanse)

If you wish to apply for admission to higher education, are aged 25 or over and do not have higher education entrance qualifications, you may apply on the basis of prior learning. The University of Stavanger itself has the authority to assess what qualifications that are required. Please upload a CV and work-certificate.

Applicants with a foreign education

You must document their higher education entrance qualification according to the GSU-list. You can find more information about the GSU-list here by choosing the country where your education is taken. The language requirement is mandotary for English and Norwegian.

You must upload an offical translated diploma in either English or a Scandinavian language before submission.

Language requirements

Applicants with Norwegian or English as a second language must document sufficient knowledge of Norwegian or English.
