Content
The course consists of five topics:
- The importance of communication and relationships
- The resource and coping perspective
- Conflicts and conflict management
- Digital communication
- Insight into research-based knowledge
Social work requires good communication and relational skills. This applies to work in relation to individuals as well as groups, users as well as relevant personnel.
Learning outcome
After successfully completing and passing the course, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
The importance of communication and relationships
- Has knowledge about social work theory and methods that focus on individuals, families, groups and society.
- Has knowledge about communication, relationships, interaction and supervision/guidance.
- Can apply academic knowledge about relationships and communication in supervision/guidance, motivation and systematic change work, and can guide users, patients, relatives and relevant personnel who are in learning, coping and change processes.
- Has insight into ethical issues and can manage ethical dilemmas in the professional role and in encounters with people.
The resource and coping perspective
- Has knowledge about coping and development conditions in children, young people, adults and the elderly
- Can apply academic knowledge in order to identify resources and provide hope in collaboration with people in vulnerable life situations.
Collaboration, conflicts and conflict management
- Can plan, implement and lead coordinated and interprofessional collaboration between different services and service levels.
- Can reflect on risk and how to manage conflicts and reduce the risk of adverse events, and has knowledge about methods for following this up systematically.
- Has insight into how to exercise judgment in situations where there is inadequate and/or conflicting information, and identify opportunities within different professional and institutional contexts.
Digital communication
- Has insight into the importance of digital communication in professional practice and interaction.
- Can master digital tools, including knowledge about digital security, and can assist in the development of and use suitable technology, and has knowledge about its possibilities and limitations in social work.
Insight into research-based knowledge
- Has knowledge about social science methodology and its possibilities and limitations.
- Can assess scientific knowledge in a practical context.
- Can apply research-based, experience-based and user-based knowledge in professional practice.

Scope: 2500 words (+/- 10%) including table of contents and notes; excluding source referencing and bibliography. Referencing style: APA 7th.Students who fail the re-sit or re-scheduled course examination must take the next ordinary examination together with the subsequent year group. The compulsory activities that have already been approved do not have to be retaken. Students must take the examination in accordance with any new and revised course description, but decide themselves whether to follow teaching in the new examination semester.
Coursework requirements
Both compulsory activities must be approved in order for the student to take the examination. Approval/non-approval of compulsory activities is announced on Studentweb, normally no later than 7 days before the examination. Students who lack approval of one or more compulsory activities will be withdrawn from the examination.
Group seminar: Academic presentation for the lecturer and fellow students in a seminar session.
75% attendance requirement: 75% attendance is required for the teaching in skills training groups and seminars. Students who have less than 75% attendance in the compulsory teaching activities lose the right to take the examination, regardless of the reason.
