NB! This is an elective course and may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by January 20th for the spring semester.

Path-integral formulation of quantum mechanics, quantum fields and particles, Lorentz symmetry, free boson and fermion fields, perturbation theory and Feynman diagrams, scattering amplitudes, gauge invariance, basic aspects of renormalization, spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Higgs mechanism, selected applications.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the student should:

K: Understand the basic concepts of quantum field theory such as free boson and fermion fields, Feynman diagrams and scattering amplitudes, spontaneous symmetry breaking.

F1: Be able to determine the classical spectrum of simple field theories.

F2: Be able to compute scattering amplitudes for simple scattering processes.

G: Have a rudimentary insight in the role quantum field theory plays in our understanding of nature.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students.
