Students who do not receive any other travel support from Erasmus+ will receive an additional one-time payment of 50 EUR and up to 4 days of grant for the return journey if relevant, by traveling in an environmentally friendly manner.
The objectives of the green travel grant are:
- Reduce the carbon footprint of students going on exchange, especially by reducing air travel.
- Facilitate more students to go on exchange to Europe.
What is defined as green travel?
"Travel that uses low-emissions means of transport for the main part of the travel, such as bus, train or car-pooling." - Erasmus + Glossary of terms
To be eligible for the grant, over 50% of the travel distance (from Norway to the exchange destination) must be covered by environmentally friendly modes of transport such as bus, electric car, bicycle, train, or carpooling. Please note that travel by boat (e.g., from Kristiansand to Hirtshals) is not included. In addition to the 50 EUR grant, it will be possible to apply for a grant for up to 4 travel days. The duration of the journey (round-trip) must be documented for the assessment of an additional grant for up to 4 days related to the travel.

Students planning a trip that meets the requirements for green travel must indicate their desire for "green travel top-up" in the grant agreement. Grants for green travel will be paid along with any remaining grant after the end of the exchange. Students who have not indicated their desire for 'Green travel top-up' in the grant agreement will not be able to apply for it once the agreement is signed.
Green travel must be documented by filling out the Declaration on Honour for Green Travel (PDF) form after you return. Please upload the form in the Exchange Guide. If you do not have access to this portal, you can send it by email.
In addition to the grant for green travel through Erasmus+, UiS has also established its own environmental grant of NOK 2.000 for students going on exchange.
