What can The Study Lab do for you?
Academic Writing
Are you writing a paper? Get guidance in academic writing from student mentors. The Study Lab is available for all students at UiS. Book an appointment or drop in! Use your UiS student mail when contacting us.
During busy hours we may not be able to help everyone who drops in. Make an appointment in advance to ensure that you get help.
You can book up to two guidances per semester. Regarding a specific take-home exam, you can only book one guidance.
If you cannot come to the session you have booked, please cancel or change your booking via the link in the booking confirmation.
It is not possible to book a new appointment if you do not change a booking in advance, but you are welcome to drop by during our opening hours.
Individual guidance
The Study Lab offers dialogue based guidance in academic writing. The guidance is given by student mentors.
We offer two kinds of guidance:
Drop in guidance for 20 minutes and booked appointments for up to 40 minutes.
Your responsibility:
Bring your thesis statement to the session. If you have booked an appointment, the thesis statement should be sent to the mentor at least one day ahead of the appointment.

- Defining the thesis statement
- Structuring and managing your text
- Phrasing
- Writing an abstract
- Source criticism
- How to cite sources
What we can’t do for you:
- Proofreading/linguistic choices
- Editing
- Professional supervising (guidance)
- Consider level on thesis
Remember: Your supervisor’s advice always comes first!
