University of Stavanger, University of Bergen and Norwegian University of Science and Technology collaborates with South Africa to improve research and higher education in a pioneers collaboration in scientific research.
Worldwide we are facing growing concerns due to the accumulation of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. Compounds such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products have been observed in surface waters because of insufficient removal by sewage treatment prior to discharge. Although those products have improved our lives, there are important knowledge gaps that need to be fulfil on how they affect aquatic species after they are discharged and risks due to consumption of contaminated seafood.
The project (RCN project # 309476) will address these topics and will build on the already established collaboration between Norway and South Africa in the SANOCEAN project entitled “Marine Sewage Outfalls – Environmental Impact Evaluation” (RCN project # 287516).
The INTPART Project South Africa Workshop (25th and 26th March 2024, Venue: SARETEC Building, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Bellville Campus, Cape Town)
In an era where global challenges demand collective solutions, the forthcoming workshop between Norwegian scientists, South African research leaders and emerging researchers will be a beacon of international collaboration. Held against shared ambitions and mutual respect for scientific inquiry, the workshop will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, skill-sharing, and initiating a consortium between South African universities and Norwegian institutions.
The University of Stavanger's INTPART project team will hold a two-day workshop at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, facilitated by BEE Solutions and Consultancy Services, focuses on science-driven sustainable development in Africa.
Participants at the workshop include leaders in higher education, established researchers, public sector practitioners, emerging researchers, and postgraduate students.
The workshop aims to 1) share expertise through case studies of collaborative projects, 2) foster networking, collaboration, and student exchanges between Norwegian and South African researchers, and 3) potentially establish partnerships between South African and Norwegian universities.
The workshop, being anchored in mutual respect and academic curiosity, will provide a platform for scientists from both nations to engage in fruitful discussions, exchange ideas, and explore potential areas of collaboration. Despite the geographical distance, Norway and South Africa share a common goal: to address pressing global challenges through scientific innovation and cooperation. To foster collaboration and ignite a consortium that transcends borders, the workshop will bring together minds from diverse backgrounds, united by their passion for advancing science and addressing societal challenges. Norway, renowned for its expertise in various research fields, and South Africa, a hub of innovation and talent, found common ground in their pursuit of scientific excellence.
The workshop will also strongly emphasise supporting emerging researchers and nurturing talent. Recognizing the importance of empowering the next generation of scientists, the event will provide a platform for young researchers from South Africa to share their student mobility experiences in Norway, show case their results, and network with established leaders in their respective fields. Through mentorship programs and collaborative projects, the workshop aims to bridge the gap between generations and create a supportive ecosystem for scientific inquiry.
At the core of the workshop's success will be the spirit of inclusivity and mutual respect that will permeate every interaction. Participants from diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and career stages will be together with a shared sense of purpose, driven by a common goal of advancing knowledge and creating positive change. The workshop will serve as a testament to the transformative power of international collaboration in overcoming barriers and driving innovation.
Hopefully, a bond that will lay the foundation for a dynamic partnership between Norwegian and South African institutions will be forged with the potential to catalyse groundbreaking research and create a lasting impact on a global scale.
