NB! This is an elective course and may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by August 20th.
- Viscosity,
- Non-Newtonian and Newtonian fluids,
- Viscoelasticity,
- Extensional viscosity
- Shear thinning and shear thickening properties of fluids,
- Modelling flow curves,
- Rheology of fluids
- Polymer solutions
- Emulsions
- Dispersions (including the zeta potential)
- Rheology of drilling fluids
- Cement Rheology
- Powder rheology
Learning outcome
The student will learn how to measure and use fluid and gel property measurements for application in the process industry. This knowledge can be used to determine optimal conditions for predicting pressure losses of flow in pipes, annuli and through equipment. Similarly, the student will learn about shelf life of products consisting of fluids and gels. Such knowledge is relevant for:
- Drilling and completion of geothermal, carbon capture, oil or gas wells
- Placement and curing of cement and concrete
- Industrial production of liquid-based food products (including cheeses)
- Production of water and oil based paints
- Battery production
- Production of medicines
- Blood rheology (Hemorheology)
- Paper production
- Handling quick clay formations
- and other applications
The students learn about the deformation and flow of these materials.
This course generates input to programming packages.
Kunnskap:
The students will be able to select a relevant rheological model for a future application. They should be able to use this model within the correct sets of deformation rates. This includes prediction of pressure losses in pipes and annuli for complex fluids.
Ferdigheter:
The students will be able to use standard and scientific instruments a rheologist should be able to use with correct accessories. They will also be able to characterize rheological behaviour of fluids.
Generell kompetanse:
The students should have good background to introduce rheological models into Python programming of industrial processes.

The course has a continuous assessment consisting of a portfolio and a final written exam. The written exam is held digitally on campus. The portfolio counts for 50% of the final grade, and the exam counts for 50% of the final grade. The portfolio is stretched throughout the semester consist of five laboratory reports. The reports are to be done individually. All the reports in the portfolio and the exam must be passed in order to pass the course. If a student fail the portfolio, he or she must re-do the portfolio the next time the course is offered. A re-sit exam is offered for students who fail or has a valid absence at the exam.
