Before you apply - Deadlines

Some study programmes have specific deadlines and each applicant is responsible to apply within the deadline. Read here about the different application deadlines.

Local applicants who wish to apply on the basis of prior qualifications or early admission, must apply within 1 March and tick the respective field in the application.

The deadline to upload all your documents is the same as the application deadline.

I.e. for studies with the application deadline 10 January, you must upload your documents within 10 January. For studies with the deadline 1 March, you must upload documents within 1 March. For studies with the deadline 15 April, documents must be uploaded within 15 April.

Generally, you must upload all documents within the application deadline. Only few documents which are not available within this deadline can be delivered after that.

This applies for applicants who complete their bachelor's degree in the spring semester they are applying for studies. You must document the results from the first semesters you have completed until the date of application.

Local applicants who must complete a language test in the period of application must upload the official results within 1 July for admission to PPU, master degrees and further studies. This late submission deadline does not apply to studies with the application deadline 5 February, which require work experience for admission.

Applicants to programmes which require work experience for admission, which have the application deadline 5 February, must upload all documentation within latest 10 February.

In order to apply for early admission, you must apply within 1 March, note that it will not always be possible to receive an early answer. Read more about early admission.

It is possible to apply on the basis of prior qualification to several of our studies. You must apply within 1 March to most programmes. Note that some programmes might have earlier deadlines. Read more about prior qualification.

Before you apply - Admission requirements

The admission requirements are stated on each study programme's website, find the different study programmes here. Remember to also check information regarding documentation requirements and language requirements.

Firstly, check the admission requirements for the study programme you wish to apply to. Then read the information about documentation requirements and language requirements. The required documents needs to be uploaded to the application portal, Søknadsweb.

Yes, for applicants with foreign education there may be specific deadlines, language requirements or documentation requirements.

This may apply to applicants with high school education, higher education, or both from outside Norway. Read more information for applicants with foreign education.

Work experience must be documented with a letter from employer. Read more about this under documentation requirements.

Remember to check that all dates, working hours, work title etc. are correct before you upload the document. You are responsible to note any mistakes which might give you less work experience than you actually have.

I am working in an 80% position, how much do I have to work to cover one year work experience?

To calculate how much the work you have documented, we need to see how long you have worked in the position and calculate what it will equal in full-time work.

We calculate how many months you have worked in the position. After that we will multiply the number of months with the percentage of your position and divide by 100 (full-time percentage).

Example: You have documented working about 13,5 months in 80% position: 13,5 months in the position x 80% working position / 100 = 10,8 months in full-time position.

If the working position you currently hold at the application deadline is confirmed in the documentation to be your current position, and the documentation was written in the application year, we can calculate the experience to 31 July.

However, if there is a change of position before 31 July on the document, we will calculate until the end date of the position you are holding at the time the document was written. We cannot include positions starting after the application deadline, as we need confirmation from employer that you are currently holding the position to include it in the calculation.

Before you apply - Calculating of GPA for local admission

Yes, we have the overview on our Norwegian website for the grade/point limits.

For ECTS grades, we are calculating a weighed average of all grades: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2 and E=1.

All grades of the relevant degree for admission will be multiplied with the number of credits in the course. This sum will then be divided by the total amount of credits which were multiplied with the grades. For admission to Master in Technology the amount of credits in mathematics and statistics will be doubled and then multiplied with the grade.

If your education uses a different grading system, read more about the conversion of results for local admission.

You can read more about supplementary points and conversion scale in the Regulations concerning admission to studies and courses at the University of Stavanger (pdf).

If we do not have a conversion scale for your grading scale, a discretionary evaluation will be performed. We recommend to attach the grading scale/diploma supplement of your university/college if a special grading system is used, e.g. if one has taken the whole bachelor's degree in a country outside Norway.

Several of our studies require a minimum grade average of C in the bachelor's degree. This refers to C in the ECTS-scale where A-E are passing grades and F is fail. If you have an education using a different grading scale (and your university does not have its own conversion to the ECTS-scale), we will have to calculate your grades into ECTS grades. For more information, see our website regarding conversion scales and calculation of the grade point average.

All courses of the degree that qualifies you will be included when we calculate your grade average. If it is a bachelor's degree that qualifies you, all courses of the degree will be included.

Make sure that your documentation shows the courses and grades which make up the degree.

No, not necessarily. We are calculating the average of the courses in your bachelor's degree and cannot switch out courses which are not approved in your degree.

If you have taken a course outside your degree or after you received your diploma, your institution must approve that this course corresponds with one of the courses in your degree. You must upload a confirmation from your institution regarding which course in your degree can be substituted with which course you have taken additionally.

For applicants with a Norwegian education background, the following applies:

For a diploma consisting of both grades and pass/fail, “pass” will be held outside the calculation of points.

For ranking of applicants with diplomas without numerical/letter grades, the grade is
considered to be a pass as C = 3.

See Regulations concerning admission to studies and courses at the University of Stavanger, Section 3-3, 3.

In the admission to master programmes, you may as an applicant with Norwegian educational background receive supplementary points for higher education that is not included in the admission criteria, relevant work experience after completed bachelor degree and for exchange during the degree qualifying you for admission. This is specified in the Regulations concerning admission to studies and courses at the University of Stavanger.

The different programmes may in addition have their own supplementary points, this will be specified in the programmes supplementary rules.
Remember that any certificate/letter documenting work experience must follow our documentation requirements.

No. If the programme you wish to apply for has a grade requirement of minimum a Norwegian C in the ECTS-scale, you need to meet the requirement with the exam results in your bachelor's degree. Supplementary points will not be included to meet the requirement.

If you have completed your bachelor's degree in Norway, we will not include the grades from exchange in your application points. See Regulations concerning admission to studies and courses at the University of Stavanger Section 3-3, 6.

Please include the transcript or other official documents to document the courses you have completed during the exchange, as well as the diploma and transcript from the bachelor's degree. If you have completed your bachelor's degree in Norway and have your results through Vitnemålsportalen, the exchange courses must be uploaded as a separate document, as the exchange courses are usually not included in the system.

One or two semesters exchange as a part of the degree qualifying you for admission, may lead to supplementary points.

After having submitted the application

The study programmes have different admission requirements and therefore different documentation requirements. It is very important that you check the admission requirements to the programme you apply for and the information in the application receipt to ensure that you upload the required documents. The application receipt can be found in Søknadsweb in "My Applications" and you will also receive it by email shortly after having applied.

Documents must be uploaded to "My Documents" in Søknadsweb. (Not in Studentweb!) Read more about the required formats in documentation requirements.

The programmes that are taught in Norwegian and the programmes that are taught in English have their own requirements. Read more about language requirements.

There are a few ways to get supplementary points if you have Norwegian educational background (exchange during the degree you qualify with, relevant working experience or other higher education credits than the degree you qualify with). It might be possible that you qualify for supplementary points; read more about them in the section above.

If you have finished upper secondary/videregående skole in Norway and the document is registered in Nasjonal vitnemålsdatabase (NVB), you do not need to upload the diploma to document that you meet the language requirements.

If you are finishing your programme in the semester you are applying, at one of the study places in Norway that exchange results, you will not need to upload documentation (unless you have gotten courses approved from other places). This is also valid for applicants that have completed their degree after 2005.

All education taken abroad, or in Norway before 2005, must be documented with a final diploma and transcript.

If you have been on an exchange or have had courses from other educational institutions recognised you must document this by uploading a final diploma and transcript.

If your education is completed outside of UiS (but in Norway), you can check which results are in our systems when you are logged into Søknadsweb, on the page for "External Results".

Education completed at BI, Bjørknes høyskole/Oslo New University College, or other study places with results not in the system, must be uploaded to "My Documents" within the documentation deadline. Remember to upload all of the pages, and not just the diploma or the transcript.

If you are offered the programme you have placed as number one, you will not receive an offer for the programmes on lower priorities. It is therefore important to make sure to prioritize the programmes in your application.

If you wish to change the priority for the application, you will need to do this as soon as possible and before 1 May (for programmes with application deadline 15 April). You cannot add new programmes after the application deadline.

Programmes with work experience requirements that have the application deadline 5 February cannot be rearranged after the application deadline.

Yes, for some programmes within the deadline. But not for all programmes.

It is not possible for programmes with work experience requirements that have an application deadline 5 February, like Pre-hospital Critical Care (PHCC), helsesykepleie, jordmorfag, kreftsykepleie or spesialsykepleie (anestesi-, intensiv- og operasjonssykepleie).

For the programmes where it is possible, it is not possible after 1 May. This to ensure that we can finish the applications and send out the outcome of the applications as soon as possible.

Primarily it is your responsibility to upload the documentation that is relevant for your application within the deadline. Read more about the format of the documentation.

But, we send an email if we can see that something is missing that may qualify you to the programme. There will be a deadline of around 1 week to upload the documents, so make sure to check the email you signed up with at least once every week from the time you registered the application.

Receiving the outcome of your application

Our deadline to send out the outcome for admission to master programmes and further education starting in the autumn semester, is within 25 July. But we will usually send questions, offers and outcomes before this, so make sure to check your email from when you apply and during the spring and summer.

Make sure to check the email you registered the application with is an email you can check at least once a week, to not miss questions or offers. There will be a deadline of around one week to upload any requested documents or reply to an offer.

Note that studies which require work experience and have an early application deadline might send the outcome of your application as soon as March/April!

Sometimes we may send offers to some of the applicants earlier than to others, due to applicants that are qualified when they apply and have a high grade point average that we can see will meet the grade requirement. There may also be a difference to the different programmes, when the points to be offered a study place will vary.

Yes.

But, if you accept the waiting list place and receive an offer before 25 July, you will lose the study place you first accepted.

If you receive an offer from 25 July and later, you can choose to keep the first study place you accepted, or choose to accept the new study place.

Yes, but you need to email masteropptak@uis.no with your application number and explain what you want to change. Example: My application number is XXXXXX. I want to keep my study place at XXX and withdraw from the waiting list for XXX.

No - at this time, the Søknadsweb is not connected to the other study places in Norway. Which means that if you accept an offer from someone else, we appreciate if you let us know that you accepted a study place somewhere else and will not be starting at UiS this semester.

Contact masteropptak@uis.no or ppu-opptak@uis.no with your application number and let us know which programme you wish to withdraw from.

If you have already registered for the semester and paid the semester fee, you withdraw from your study place through the digital service desk. Here you can also apply for a refund of the semester fee.

Unfortunately we don't have a system that will update this automatically in Søknadsweb. It is possible to contact masteropptak@uis.no and include your application number and study programme with the questions regarding waiting list and point limits for admission. In busy periods, it might take some time before you receive the reply, but we will reply as soon as possible.

An allocated student place may be reserved for the following year in connection with military service, childbirth, adoption or other significant grounds. See Regulations concerning admission to studies and courses at the University of Stavanger, Section 1-10.

The reason for reserving the study place must be circumstances outside of your own control, and not that you choose not to start the programme the year you receive an offer.

To apply for reserving your study place, you need to accept the place within the deadline, and send in an application within 3 weeks from when you receive the offer. This deadline does not apply if the reason for reservation occurs after the first 3 weeks, but it will need to be documented in the application and be sent in as soon as possible.

Application with documentation for reason for reservation must be sent to:
masteropptak@uis.no for admission to master programmes and further education
ppu-opptak@uis.no for admission to PPU

The regulations for exams at the University of Stavanger specifies that the study right expires when you are admitted to a different programme at UiS, unless it is decided that the previous study right can still be valid.

Multiple of our Faculties do not wish for their students to have multiple study rights. Students that wish to have multiple study rights must contact the Faculty or Institute as soon as possible to find an agreement.

After accepting a study offer at UiS

Towards the end of July we will transfer study rights to the applicants that have accepted the study place. Some days after this, you will receive log in - information from IT, if you have not previously been a student at UiS.

All courses that you have previously passed, and that are a part of the education plan for the study programme you have been admitted to, will be included in your plan.

If you have education at a different study place that you want to include in your new education plan, you need to apply for approval after admission to the programme. To do this, the education must be equal in content, scope and level to the courses at UiS.

If you wish to withdraw and have not registered as a student in Studentweb or paid the semester fee, you can email masteropptak@uis.no or ppu-opptak@uis.no (for PPU students) and explain that you wish to withdraw from the (name of the programme) and your application number is (...).

If you have registered as a student, you can withdraw through the Digital service desk. You can also request refund of the semester fee.
