About the department

Kjølv Egelands hus på UiS Campus Ullandhaug

The department is focusing on mechanical and civil disciplines, including the petroleum and renewable energy sectors.

The students will be qualified to take over challenging careers in industry in a broad capacity, inclusive of design and robust engineering of complex systems, developing and implementing new technology, methods and principles for optimization of engineering systems, etc.

IMBM's employees are divided into four professional groups, and the department’s expertise are:

  • Civil and Structural engineering
  • Mechanical design, production and simulation
  • Marine and Subsea technology
  • Industrial Asset Management

Offshore wind is also a focus area at the department. Read more here (pdf).

Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science offers study programs at bachelor's, master's and Ph.d level. There are two master's programs in marine and subsea technology that are international, and half of the students at these programs are international.
